A specialization in French studies equips students for professional opportunities in government, tourism, business, marketing, translation, interpretation, and education. Renowned for its fashion, cuisine, and cultural heritage, France also plays a pivotal role in international health and commerce. The Detroit metropolitan area maintains strong French cultural ties, situated directly across from Windsor, Canada (a bilingual region where French holds official status) and hosting more than 300 French business operations.
This academic department provides language courses and programs across fourteen distinct languages. Beyond language acquisition and Global Studies, the curriculum explores the rich cultures and literary traditions of both ancient Greece/Rome and contemporary societies, offering courses in native languages and English translations. Studying diverse languages, literatures, and cultures not only broadens global perspectives but also hones critical thinking, improves English comprehension, and elevates writing proficiency. This linguistic and cultural foundation serves as ideal preparation for professional fields such as law, business, healthcare, education (secondary or higher), library science, and museum work. These studies also create strong career pathways for students entering government, publishing, tourism, or corporate sectors—any profession that values intellectual agility, communication expertise, and a well-rounded liberal arts background.
