The Standard Teaching Certificate serves as Michigan's foundational teaching credential.
State regulations mandate that prospective educators complete an authorized training program (such as mathematics instruction, primary education, or language arts instruction) to qualify for teaching positions in Michigan.
Beyond finishing an approved teacher training program, Michigan legislation stipulates that educators must:
Fulfill mandatory reading coursework requirements (6 credit hours for elementary educators and 3 credit hours for secondary educators)
Achieve passing scores on the relevant Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) subject area exams. Successful completion of these exams is necessary before certification endorsement.
Central Michigan University's MDE-approved Teacher Preparation Program follows the Traditional Pathway at the undergraduate level. Applicants must satisfy basic admission criteria for the teacher preparation program. The program incorporates the MDE's required reading curriculum. Candidates must pass MTTC subject exams prior to receiving certification endorsement.
