The increasing specialization in modern academic fields presents both obstacles and prospects for researchers working at the intersection of mathematics and its practical applications. The Applied Mathematics Option enables students from diverse academic backgrounds to follow a conventional applied mathematics curriculum while maintaining the flexibility to deeply explore an applied field. Applicants aren't necessarily required to hold an undergraduate Mathematics degree, but must demonstrate proficiency in advanced calculus and linear algebra equivalent to a Mathematics bachelor's level. Students then enjoy significant freedom to pursue specialized coursework in both Mathematics and their chosen application area.

Qualification Requirements
The Mathematics Department requirements are as follows:
TOEFL: at least 600 (PBT) or 100 (IBT), or
IELTS: at least 7
Students should have taken upper-level analysis and linear algebra courses before applying, and have the equivalent of an undergraduate degree in mathematics, statistics, or a related field. Additional upper-level courses like abstract algebra, functional or complex analysis, optimization, applied mathematics, topology, etc. will be taken into account. The application will require:
