The Master of Arts in Religious Studies is a coursework-focused program requiring 36 credit hours of classes and a final portfolio submission. Students must complete at least 12 credit hours from 700-level courses, including REL 700: Theory and Method in the Study of Religion, with the remaining 24 credits available from either 600 or 700-level courses.
At least one month before graduation, students must submit their final portfolio to a review committee comprising their chosen faculty member and the graduate director. This portfolio should contain: a resume, personal statement, three graduate-level papers (with at least one theoretical piece), and a 12-15 page reflective essay examining their academic journey, theoretical engagement, personal development, and evolving perspectives on religion. Students will also present their portfolio during a one-hour committee meeting. The evaluation follows a pass/fail system (with resubmission options), assessing overall presentation, clarity, reflective depth, and demonstrated learning outcomes.
