The Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) is structured as a two-year, 48-credit program for full-time students. This graduate program caters to individuals seeking advanced theological education across various disciplines within the Divinity School. It can prepare students for doctoral work in religious studies, ordained or diaconal ministry in specific denominations, leadership roles in faith-based nonprofits, or personal spiritual growth.
The M.T.S. curriculum offers specialized study paths for those pursuing careers such as: religious education at secondary and some college levels, advanced academic research in religion, denominational ministry roles, social justice advocacy work, and other faith-based leadership positions. The program also welcomes students seeking deeper personal religious understanding. Participants can select either the General M.T.S. track or a Concentration track based on their professional goals.
Completion requires at least 48 semester hours, typically finished in four full-time semesters, with all degree requirements to be met within five years of enrollment. The curriculum comprises three components: Core Requirements, Focus/Concentration Areas, and Electives. Students may include up to 9 credits from other Vanderbilt graduate programs toward their degree (cross-listed Divinity courses excluded). Those with prior coursework in required subjects may waive specific classes if they've completed equivalent undergraduate studies. Transfer credits (maximum 12 hours) are accepted from graduate programs accredited by the ATS Commission on Accrediting.
