Genuine and profound understanding of Christianity requires exploring other faiths, their impact on Christian thought, and how Christianity has depicted these religious traditions. Global Christianities and Interreligious Encounters examines the inherently cross-cultural and interfaith dimensions of Christianity's diverse expressions since its inception—from Second Temple Judaism and Roman religions in the first century C.E., to interactions with Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism through trade, conquest, and mission work, to modern encounters with new religious movements. This academic focus provides Vanderbilt Divinity School students with courses that explore Christianity's dynamic relationships with other faiths and their reciprocal influences. The program's ultimate goal is to empower the VDS community—students, graduates, and supporters—to better grasp the historical complexities shaping their Christian perspectives in relation to both other Christian traditions and world religions.
