The Master of Arts in Latin American Studies mandates coursework focused on Latin American themes or closely related subjects. Students pursuing this degree can select between a thesis track (24 credit hours plus 6 thesis credits) or a non-thesis alternative (33 credits). Both paths necessitate completing LAS 5901 - Research Seminar, an interdisciplinary course concentrating on research techniques and reference material utilization for Latin American studies. Graduate candidates must exhibit language proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or K'iche' Maya, requiring advanced skills in one language and intermediate ability in another. All admitted students receive comprehensive financial support through a fellowship covering a monthly stipend and health insurance.
Qualified applicants with bachelor’s or comparable non-U.S. degrees are eligible for admission to the Graduate School. Applications from international students with three-year bachelor’s degrees will also be considered.
The minimum acceptable score on the paper-based TOEFL is 570, and for the Internet-based test, 88. Many programs, however, require a considerably higher level of proficiency.
For IELTS, the minimum acceptable score will vary by program. In many cases, a score of at least 7.0 is desirable.
