Established in 1962, Ohio State's Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) brings together 90 faculty members across six colleges and 26 departments, serving as a key driver in the university's mission to globalize academic programs, encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration, and broaden intellectual viewpoints. Created and overseen by CLAS with its inaugural offering in fall 2010, the Master of Arts in Latin American Studies demands completion of 30 semester credit hours. Admission requirements include proving advanced Spanish or Portuguese skills equivalent to three years of university study or native/near-native fluency. Designed for maximum adaptability, students select two thematic or disciplinary focus areas with faculty advisor support. Beyond concentration coursework, the program mandates a research methods class and INTSTDS 5640: Globalization in Latin America. Degree candidates can opt for either a thesis project or comprehensive exams in their chosen fields. The program's structure allows seamless integration with other graduate studies, enabling students to pursue this MA as a dual degree alongside another graduate program.
