The Center for Latin American Studies provides an interdisciplinary Master's program that integrates two academic disciplines, proficiency in Spanish and Portuguese, three foundational LAS courses, along with elective options or a thesis component.
In their initial semester, all LAS graduate candidates must enroll in a 3-credit introductory seminar (LAS 500) that familiarizes them with Latin American studies and research methodologies. Additionally, students must complete a research methods course and an interdisciplinary LAS research seminar (such as LAS 596a) in later semesters.
Participants choose a primary specialization area, completing 12 graduate-level credits within this field, which must include at least one research seminar. Available primary concentrations span thematic domains like Borders of the Americas, Environment and Development, History and Culture, and Power and Inequality, alongside regional studies centered on Mexico, Central America, or Brazil. Disciplinary options for primary focus include Anthropology, Geography and Regional Development, History, and Latin American Literature (Spanish and Portuguese).
Students additionally select a secondary concentration area, requiring nine graduate credits. This secondary focus may be thematic, regional, or drawn from the aforementioned disciplinary areas, with additional options including Art History, Journalism, Language, Reading and Culture, Political Science, and Women's Studies.
