The Master of Arts program in Latin American Studies equips students with analytical skills and cultural knowledge to examine Latin American and Caribbean societies - a crucial region in today's globalized world of increased migration. The Latin American Studies M.A. program has these key learning goals:
To examine Latin America and the Spanish Caribbean through cultural, geographical, historical, political, and social lenses
To gain insight into the socio-cultural roots of U.S. Latino populations
To analyze patterns of economic growth and stagnation from comparative viewpoints
To conduct cross-disciplinary research in humanities and social sciences employing diverse methodological approaches
To cultivate strong writing and analytical abilities through rigorous academic investigation
To enhance Spanish and/or Portuguese language proficiency

Qualification Requirements

In addition to the general requirements for admission to the Graduate School, an undergraduate degree, preferably in Latin American Studies or in a related field such as Anthropology, Architecture, Art, Geography, History, International Business, International Studies, Political Science, Portuguese, Sociology, or Spanish, with a GPA of at least 3.0 is required. However, the admissions committee will consider applicants with an average lower than this minimum if the other elements of the application are strong.

Spanish proficiency at the advanced level as demonstrated by undergraduate coursework, an oral interview, a standardized test, and/or life experience is also required. Knowledge of Portuguese is desirable but not required.

Three letters of recommendation on the UNC Charlotte recommendation form
International students only: evidence of proficiency in English as well as the following UNC Charlotte forms: immigration status, statement of financial responsibility, and estimated expenses
A minimum score of 83 on the Internet-based TOEFL or a minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS is required.
