The American Studies program at UT Austin features engaging courses taught by renowned faculty committed to exploring the intricacies of American society. Our curriculum examines the country's historical development within worldwide perspectives, border formations, and the impact of cultural representations to critically analyze societal norms, political systems, and institutional disparities. We employ cross-disciplinary methods spanning numerous academic domains such as Anthropology, Art History, Ethnic Studies, Film and Media Studies, Gender/Queer Studies, Urban Geography, Historical Analysis, and Sociological Research. Course materials encompass diverse media like literature, musical works, performance arts, cinema, graphic narratives, and digital content to examine concepts surrounding identity, social stratification, and physical/cognitive differences.
Our department faculty collaboratively designs coursework to equip students for advanced scholarship across multiple disciplines. Both individual professors and the department collectively ensure transparent learning goals and constructive evaluation for all graduate studies. Students must proactively pursue academic guidance, fulfill degree specifications, and select suitable classes to maintain steady advancement toward graduation. Regular consultations with advisors help learners stay informed about academic developments and support their educational progression.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
