Vanderbilt boasts a dynamic community of scholars specializing in legal history. Our faculty's knowledge spans from antiquity to modern America, with a particular focus on cross-cultural and thematic exploration. Their research covers subjects as varied as violence in ancient societies, prostitution's historical context, racial identity deception, Islamic jurisprudence, slavery in America, and imperial legal systems of the early modern period.
At the heart of our community lies the Legal History Workshop, an annual speaker series that showcases groundbreaking approaches to legal history. This workshop intentionally adopts a global perspective and comparative methodology.
Beyond specialized courses in their chosen fields, students are advised to enroll in the biennial Methods in Legal History seminar. This collaborative course, offered in tandem with the workshop, exposes students to diverse approaches in legal historical research.
