New York University's History Department provides a Ph.D. specialization in Atlantic world studies. This expanding discipline examines historical patterns across Africa, the Americas, and Europe, comparing Atlantic historical developments and exploring subregional histories tied to early modern and modern systems. The program leverages NYU's expertise in empire and colonial studies while integrating interdisciplinary methods like cultural history and ethnohistory. History department members in the Atlantic field actively collaborate with colleagues in national and transnational specialties, including African Diaspora studies. Given its interdisciplinary nature, Atlantic history doctoral candidates are advised to supplement their coursework with classes in anthropology, literature, and related fields. NYU's Atlantic World Workshop, founded in 1997, serves as a gathering point for students and faculty to explore themes like diasporas, slavery, transatlantic movements, cultural expressions, gender dynamics, and commerce (1500-1900). This forum welcomes diverse theoretical viewpoints and particularly fosters dialogue about innovative methodologies. Throughout the academic year, the Workshop hosts sessions where scholars at all career stages present works-in-progress, with pre-circulated papers and open attendance for both NYU affiliates and external researchers.
