Michigan State University's European history program approaches Europe as a dynamic, evolving subject of study. We reject rigid categorizations of Europe's internal divisions—whether between East/West or North/South—or fixed geographical boundaries like the Urals, Mediterranean, or Atlantic. Instead, we explore the diverse populations and historical developments that have shaped European territories, while examining their global connections through trade, cultural exchange, and political relations.
Our department specializes in early modern through contemporary history, with particular expertise in the 19th and 20th centuries. Faculty research covers diverse themes including migration governance, consumer culture, national identity formation, youth and schooling, medical history, scientific developments, religious imperialism, democratic movements, post-conflict reconciliation, and evolving social ideologies.
