PhD candidates specializing in African history must complete 12 to 18 credit hours of coursework in this field, ideally including a seminar focused on their specific regional specialization. Students should develop expertise in African historiography through 6000-level seminars, covering theoretical approaches and methodological frameworks across all historical periods. At least one advanced seminar must address thematic aspects of African history. Prior to qualifying exams, students must produce three primary source-based research papers - while not all need to originate from African history seminars, non-specialized papers require committee approval.
Given variations in available historiography and the substantial background knowledge required for regional studies, students may enhance their understanding through either graduate-level supplements to upper-division history/ethnography courses or advisor-approved independent study programs involving intensive regional historical or ethnographic reading.
