The Department of Political Science emphasizes both academic instruction and scholarly research, viewing these as complementary endeavors. Our program provides comprehensive studies in core political science disciplines, including: U.S. government systems, cross-national political analysis, global relations, philosophical foundations of politics, and research methodologies. To fulfill major requirements, students deepen their knowledge through specialized courses and self-directed research within one concentration area, culminating in a comprehensive assessment. Optional minor tracks include U.S. Political Systems, Global Affairs, or Political Philosophy.
Political Science students are strongly encouraged to engage with the Tennessee Intercollegiate Student Legislature and Tennessee Moot Court initiatives. These experiential learning opportunities allow participants to develop legislative proposals and practice appellate advocacy skills. Faculty members from the Political Science department provide guidance and supervision for these competitive programs.
All candidates for admission must present transcripts of work completed in high school.
