The Political Science Department provides both a major (12 courses) and minor (6 courses) program. Below you'll find detailed requirements for each. Political science examines governance and power dynamics through domestic, international, and comparative lenses, covering political theories, systems, policies, behaviors, and institutions - including government structures, legal frameworks, and international relations. This field equips students for civic engagement and professional paths in government, legal practice, business, media, or public service.

Secondary school record
Northwestern accepts results from both the TOEFL and the IELTS.
There is no minimum score required by Northwestern. Competitive applicants demonstrate a high level of English proficiency and often score in the high range on all four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) of the TOEFL iBT, or receive IELTS band scores in highest three bands on the overall and individual scores (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).
