An Elementary Education degree equips students to obtain a Professional License from the Utah State Board of Education for teaching grades K-6. Utah State's program stands out by allowing students to gain classroom experience from their first year, unlike many universities where this typically begins in junior year. Upon graduation, students will have completed over 400 hours of classroom time and diverse field experiences with children. The teacher preparation program, known as the Bridge to Professional Practice (BPP), uses a suspension bridge metaphor—anchored at both ends to ensure a strong foundation and smooth transition into professional teaching. Undergraduates can even start endorsement programs usually offered at the graduate level. This major is ideal for transfer students with associate degrees, as the curriculum facilitates a seamless transition and timely degree completion. With nationwide teacher shortages and the need for skilled educators, the School of Teacher Education and Leadership offers two licensure pathways—Licensure Lane and General Studies Lane—approved by the Utah State Board of Education. Students choose their path after completing a 12-credit Preparation Anchor.
