The Public Humanities specialization merges in-depth study of conventional English disciplines (composition, teaching methods, critical theory, literary analysis) with practical training in versatile skills suited for diverse professions. These include positions with government entities, cultural institutions, non-profit organizations, and educational establishments in student services (admissions, academic counseling, program development and management). Alongside courses like Public Writing Formats (English 5050) and Non-Profit Grant Writing (English 5075), Public Humanities students can develop a professional portfolio showcasing work aligned with their career aspirations. For their culminating project, students have opportunities to share academic work publicly or create community-oriented initiatives, ranging from curating film festivals and digital exhibitions to developing grant proposals and social media campaigns for non-profits. The program also facilitates career development through internship opportunities with regional arts groups, government agencies, and charitable organizations.
This concentration equips graduates to critically examine texts with theoretical depth, refine teaching and communication abilities across various formats and audiences, and connect scholarly analysis with public engagement to tackle societal issues. Alumni gain expertise for careers in non-profit management and development, arts promotion and community outreach, professional writing and media, as well as roles in community college instruction and university student services.
