The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program in Spanish includes an integrated Master of Arts (M.A.) for students beginning with a bachelor's degree. We take immense pride in shaping future educators, researchers, and innovators. Our doctoral candidates work alongside faculty to pioneer fresh scholarly approaches in Spanish, Latin American, and Latinx literature and cultural studies, transforming their academic passion into varied professional paths. Alumni have pursued impactful roles conducting research, authoring publications, and teaching across diverse sectors - from major financial and tech corporations to Latin American NGOs, and educational institutions ranging from prestigious universities to K-12 schools and private consultancies.
The curriculum promotes cross-disciplinary learning through specialized graduate certificates in fields like Africana Studies, American Studies, Digital Humanities, Environmental Humanities, Gender & Sexuality Studies, Premodern Cultures & Communities, Historic Preservation, and Urban Design. Enrichment opportunities extend through internships, research groups, laboratory work, and workshops at various university centers including the Scholars Lab, Institute for Humanities and Global Cultures, Karsh Institute of Democracy's Democracy Initiative, Center for Global Inquiry and Innovation, Center for Teaching Excellence, and PhD Plus. Departmental resources feature linguistics-based teaching instruction, faculty mentorship for course coordination, and research guidance for conference participation, article submissions, and fellowship applications - supported by comprehensive databases from the Graduate School. The Mentoring Institute within Graduate & Postdoctoral Diversity Programs offers specialized support for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in academia.
