Students entering the MA program must fulfill 30 credit hours of coursework and pass a written exam. The curriculum includes three courses in the first semester followed by two courses per semester thereafter. All MA candidates are required to enroll in English 400: Composition and the Teaching of Writing, along with English 487: Literary and Critical Theory (or a comparable theory course). Starting Fall 2018, students participate in three semesters of a one-credit seminar linked to the Department Colloquium. Much like searching for that ideal writing instrument, an exceptional Master of Arts in English program must include essential components: engaging curriculum, robust research possibilities, and proven career outcomes for graduates.
Case Western Reserve University delivers these fundamentals and beyond. The program features adaptable, personalized coursework allowing students to specialize in their academic interests while potentially securing a graduate assistantship for teaching experience.
As a compact department within a leading research university, we combine the focused mentorship of a liberal arts college with institutional prestige. Our campus location offers additional advantages, with access to renowned libraries, independent bookstores, and abundant cafés (perfect for embracing the classic English graduate student stereotype).
