The Psychology and Law specialization educates students in applying fundamental social, developmental, and cognitive concepts to matters within the judicial framework. Participants in this program often focus on subjects like racial/ethnic influences in legal proceedings, eyewitness testimony accuracy, juror deliberation processes, interrogation techniques and admissions, and/or law enforcement practices. During their studies, learners are motivated to pursue both independent work and team projects alongside faculty members and fellow graduate students. The curriculum supports students in cultivating their own research initiatives within specialized areas, while receiving faculty advice on selecting relevant coursework.
With guidance from their graduate committees, students determine any supplementary classes required to fulfill their educational objectives. Under the supervision of a primary faculty advisor, each participant designs a research agenda while being urged to cooperate with other professors and peers, showcase findings at academic conferences, and contribute to scholarly publications. When aligned with their academic goals, students may have the opportunity to enroll in pertinent law courses offered by UW's College of Law.
