The University of Wyoming's PhD program in Anthropology is structured as a four-year curriculum. This program focuses on equipping students with practical skills and hands-on experiences to enhance their career prospects in both academic and professional settings. As part of the requirements, candidates must complete a teaching course and independently instruct at least one course prior to graduation. Participation in internships with government agencies or private companies is strongly recommended.
Students must complete at least 72 graduate credit hours (requirements differ for post-BA and post-MA candidates).
A minimum of six specialized courses (totaling 18 credit hours) will be tailored by the student and their advisory committee, typically finished within the initial two years of doctoral study. Depending on individual needs, additional 4000/5000-level courses from other departments may be required.
During their first or second year, students must complete two mandatory courses: ANTH 5880 (Professional Development in Anthropology) and ANTH 5890 (Pedagogical Methods in Anthropology) (6 credit hours).
