The field of archaeology offers comprehensive geographical insights into ancient civilizations, spanning from North America's Plains to Mesoamerica and the Intermediate Area. These indigenous communities varied from simple hunter-gatherer groups to complex urban civilizations and imperial systems. Faculty research focuses on diverse areas including environmental adaptation, ethnographic archaeology, public archaeology, social dynamics, stone tool and pottery studies, as well as technological applications like remote sensing in archaeological investigations.
Archaeology intersects with biological anthropology in multiple aspects. When excavating burial sites, archaeologists often collaborate with biological anthropologists to study physical characteristics, health indicators, and related subjects. Both disciplines commonly explore human-environment interactions, examining how populations have adapted to and transformed their surroundings throughout history.
