This program focuses on advanced studies in music history and literature. For certain students, such as music educators seeking graduate-level music history training instead of music education, this serves as a final degree. Others may use it as a foundation for doctoral-level musicology studies.
Though Graduate Record Examination scores aren't mandatory for applicants, those aiming for a UWM Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship or planning further graduate studies after their UWM master's degree should complete these tests early in their program.
All new and transfer graduate students must take diagnostic exams in music history and theory before their first semester at UWM, with rare exceptions. Students cannot advance beyond their first year without completing these assessments. The exams help faculty evaluate whether students are ready for graduate-level coursework or need to address any academic gaps first.
