The Classical Latin Language and Literature concentration within the Major is designed for students interested in exploring the linguistic and literary heritage of ancient Rome. The curriculum emphasizes reading, interpreting, and translating Latin works. Initial coursework prioritizes foundational grammar, syntax, and vocabulary development through textual analysis. Advanced semesters transition to studying original prose and poetry by renowned Roman writers including Cicero, Caesar, Livy, Catullus, Ovid, and Virgil, aiming to acquaint students with distinctive authorial voices and diverse classical literary forms.

Qualification Requirements

All applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency in one of the following ways:
An approved test score that meets the requirement for regular or conditional admission.
University study: Completion of at least 18 months of full-time, for-credit academic study (approximately three semesters) at a recognized or accredited institution of higher education whose language of instruction is English immediately prior to enrollment at UWM.
Secondary/high school study: Proof of completion of the last two years of secondary/high school at an institution whose language of instruction is English immediately prior to enrollment at UWM. TOEFL IBT - 79 or higher, TOEFL PBT - 548 or higher, IELTS - 6.5
