Exploring classical studies allows you to immerse yourself in the foundational cultures of Western civilization, delving into the languages, literature, history, and archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome.
You'll examine every facet of life in Greco-Roman antiquity—artistic, spiritual, ethical, and intellectual—while gaining insights that enrich your understanding of diverse fields, from art and architecture to philosophy and religion, from historical events to political systems and moral principles.
Our undergraduate program reflects the breadth of classical studies by providing three specialized tracks tailored to your interests:
Classics, for those focusing on ancient languages and their evolution.
Greek or Latin Literature, for students specializing in one language and its literary works.
Classical Archeology and Ancient History, for those more interested in historical, artistic, and archaeological studies than language.
In partnership with the English department, we offer a unique concentration combining classical and English literature. For aspiring Latin teachers, we collaborate with the Education Program to provide certification for secondary school instruction.
Learning Latin and Greek while studying the societies and ideas of antiquity strengthens your linguistic abilities and broadens your perspective on modern life—including your civic responsibilities. This field serves as an exceptional foundation for advanced studies in disciplines like comparative literature, archaeology, visual arts, linguistics, philosophy, and history. It also prepares you for professional paths in business, education, public service, law, library sciences, and healthcare.
