Our methodology for community design and research emphasizes creating, assessing, and recording inclusive, participatory processes tailored to each community's distinct blend of natural and cultural assets, socioeconomic factors, and catalysts for change. We focus on identifying methods that enhance engagement and collaborative decision-making while establishing a common design language that embodies community values regarding their connection to both constructed and natural surroundings. This perspective is shaped by place-making as a product of thoughtful practice that examines social equity and ecological sustainability.
Students in the Community-Focused Design Program concentrate on research areas like food security, public health, and environmental well-being. This track equips you for careers that: integrate participatory design into professional work and community initiatives, guide nonprofit organizations in collaborative design at various scales (from neighborhoods to bioregions), or conduct research assessing the societal and ecological impacts of participatory design and planning.
The Community-Focused Design specialization is especially suited for graduates with accredited degrees in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning, or Urban Design seeking to specialize in community-oriented design practices.
