Exercise Physiology examines how the body biologically responds and adapts to both short-term and long-term physical activity. At UWMadison, research and graduate studies concentrate on uncovering: 1) the physiological, biochemical, and molecular foundations of these adaptations, and 2) how exercise impacts health and disease conditions.
Dr. Diffee investigates how contraction is regulated in skeletal and cardiac muscles, and how factors like exercise, injury, or illness modify these mechanisms. His work often involves assessing contractile characteristics in individual muscle fibers and cardiac cells, then linking these mechanical changes to variations in protein makeup using biochemical and molecular biology methods. Collaborative projects with faculty and students across departments (such as Nutritional Sciences, Biochemistry, the School of Medicine, and the Institute on Aging) are fostered through ongoing joint research initiatives. Meanwhile, William Schrage's lab primarily explores blood flow regulation in muscular and cerebral vascular systems.
