The Freshwater and Marine Sciences (FMS) Graduate Program provides academic pathways for earning master of science and doctoral degrees in aquatic sciences. With an interdisciplinary approach, each customized study plan delivers advanced education in freshwater and marine sciences while incorporating related scientific disciplines. Program participants receive guidance from faculty across multiple schools, including the College of Letters & Science, College of Engineering, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and School of Veterinary Medicine.
UW-Madison holds global recognition as a pioneer in limnology and aquatic ecology studies. Established in 1962 as an oceanography and limnology initiative, the FMS Program unites research and instruction from diverse disciplines to deepen knowledge about aquatic ecosystems—their formation, biodiversity, processes, and significance for humanity.

A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or a comparable degree from an international institution is required.
A minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two years of work) or a master's degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required. Applicants from an international institution must demonstrate strong academic achievement comparable to a 3.00 for an undergraduate or master's degree.
