The Chinese Literature and Culture program at UW-Madison ranks among the top programs in North America. Professors Rania Huntington and Anatoly Detwyler guide students through diverse periods and styles of both classical and contemporary literature and cultural studies. The program excels in Ming and Qing dynasty fiction and theater, supernatural literature, literary memory studies, translation, modern/contemporary literary culture and cinema, as well as Western critical approaches from traditional theory to digital humanities. Faculty maintain close working relationships with graduate students through collaborative research and frequent informal dialogues. Since 1979, the program has also published the renowned journal Chinese Literature: Essays, Articles, Reviews (CLEAR).
Students in our literature and culture program have opportunities to learn from distinguished scholars across disciplines including history, Asian American studies, film studies, English literature, political science, and gender studies.
