The Master of Arts in Teaching Latin and Classical Humanities equates to a master's degree in classics combined with additional graduate-level education coursework. This program qualifies graduates for middle and high school (grades 5-12) Latin and classical humanities teaching certification, recognized across 30 states through the Interstate Certification Compact.
The curriculum integrates educational theory and practice with Latin language studies, teaching methodologies, and curriculum development for secondary education. Central to the program are specialized seminars where classics professors demonstrate how contemporary teaching approaches can enhance Latin and classical humanities instruction. These seminars provide graduate students with direct teaching experience, research opportunities, and curriculum development practice.
Participants gain teaching experience through university-level Latin instruction and placements at partner schools in western Massachusetts. This exposes them to diverse teaching materials and methods for secondary education. Additionally, students work as teaching assistants for undergraduate classics courses covering Greek civilization, Roman history, mythology, and archaeology. The department provides financial support for student memberships in classical associations and conference attendance, offering opportunities to present research, exchange teaching strategies, and network with professionals in the field.
