Students pursuing any of the four broadfield social studies education programs will qualify for Wisconsin certification in Middle and High School Social Studies (grades 4-12). This certification covers all six core social studies disciplines: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. The curriculum is structured to help future educators meet both the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) and InTASC Teacher Standards. Offered through the School of Education, this program fulfills all core requirements, admission criteria, benchmark assessments, and legal mandates for teacher licensure.
Although all four program tracks lead to the same Wisconsin Social Studies teaching credential (2700), students can choose to focus on a specific area or pursue additional subject-specific certifications through state-approved exams after obtaining their initial license. Multiple specialized tracks allow aspiring social studies educators to customize their preparation according to their professional goals and academic interests.
The history concentration within the broadfield social studies education major is designed for those seeking 4-12 grade certification. It offers comprehensive training in fundamental history courses while exploring four major historical categories spanning global regions and eras. The program includes specialized history courses for future educators, along with additional coursework mandated by state regulations.
