The Department of Global Cultures and Languages at UWL dedicates itself to fostering both professional development and personal enrichment for students. This mission is achieved by equipping learners with multilingual communication skills grounded in cultural understanding. Together, faculty and students explore cultural traditions, behaviors, and viewpoints from around the world. Through hands-on learning experiences—including study abroad programs, internships, community initiatives, and teacher preparation—we enable students to apply their acquired cultural knowledge, linguistic abilities, analytical skills, and leadership qualities toward promoting social justice in our increasingly diverse local, national, and global communities.
Our department provides degree programs in French, German studies, and Spanish (including education tracks for French and Spanish), along with minors in Chinese studies. We also offer certificates in French proficiency, Chinese proficiency, Russian studies, and Spanish for healthcare professionals, plus coursework in Arabic, Japanese, and Hmong. Students with prior language study from high school must complete the UW System Foreign Language Placement Test to determine their appropriate starting level. While proper course placement based on test results may qualify students for retroactive credits, these are not automatically guaranteed.
