Both programs focus on achieving fluency in a chosen Nordic language (Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, or Swedish) while providing comprehensive understanding of Nordic literature and culture. The Scandinavian Area Studies track additionally demands extensive knowledge of history, social structures, political systems, film, and folk traditions, with specialization options including Baltic studies, film studies, historical research, folk narratives, political science, language learning methodologies, or translation theory.
