Every program mandates proficiency or coursework in a foreign language, with most academic emphasis placed on social sciences and history. For those primarily focused on language or literature studies, the University's specialized language departments may better align with your goals (including Asian Languages and Literature, French and Italian Studies, Spanish and Portuguese Studies, Scandinavian Studies, Slavic Languages and Literature, Classics, Germanics, and Near Eastern Languages and Civilization).

The University of Washington's China Studies M.A. program enables students to gain comprehensive knowledge of Chinese culture, history, society, and modern affairs. Language acquisition and fluency form a fundamental component of the curriculum. With over twenty faculty members, the China Studies Program delivers an extensive selection of courses spanning social sciences, humanities, and certain professional disciplines at the University. This intimate M.A. program fosters strong faculty-student relationships. Participants can integrate their China Studies graduate work with professional degrees (pending admission to those programs). Following the M.A., students may continue advanced studies in specialized academic departments.
