The Department of East Asian Studies provides two distinct Master's degree options: specialized Area Master's programs and broader General Master's programs. The Area Master's degrees allow students to concentrate on either Chinese or Japanese studies, primarily serving as preparation for doctoral research (while still functioning as terminal degrees if desired). These programs typically involve thesis writing, with linguistics students having the alternative option of completing an examination. The General Master's degrees offer flexibility to focus on China, Japan, or both regions simultaneously, with candidates choosing between a thesis or departmental paper. This program is tailored for students not planning to pursue doctoral studies.
