The Asian Studies Faculty Group oversees an interdisciplinary Master of Arts program. Drawing on university-wide resources and faculty expertise, this program transcends traditional academic boundaries, focusing on in-depth knowledge of a specific Asian region. Students complete a foundational curriculum spanning multiple departments and must demonstrate proficiency in at least one Asian language. This regional focus allows students to craft unique, cross-disciplinary programs tailored to their academic interests, with guidance from the Student Affairs office and faculty advisors. The program receives support from the Institute of East Asian Studies and Interdisciplinary Social Science Programs (ISSP) within the College of Letters and Science.
UC Berkeley has maintained its reputation for excellence in Asian Studies scholarship for decades. Professors from diverse departments actively teach and conduct research on Asian topics. Enrolled students can explore courses across various disciplines including Anthropology, Buddhist Studies, Film/Media Studies, History, Journalism, Literature, Political Science, Religion, South/Southeast Asian Studies, Sociology, and other humanities and social science fields.
The following minimum requirements apply to all graduate programs and will be verified by the Graduate Division:
