This program caters to students without an undergraduate background in Asian Studies or those seeking additional training in language and regional studies before pursuing careers in business, professional fields, or doctoral programs. The duration ranges from one to two years, based on language skills. Cornell's graduate program emphasizes close collaboration between students and their advisory committees, particularly with their primary advisor (the committee chair). Therefore, Asian Studies students are strongly advised to consult with their advisor/chair early in their first semester to create a clear roadmap for achieving their academic objectives. The Asian Studies program offers three specializations: East Asian, South Asian, or Southeast Asian studies. While students select one focus area, they're encouraged to explore interdisciplinary connections across these regions as they develop expertise in their chosen language(s) and culture.
