The Department of East Asian Studies provides two distinct Master's degree options: specialized Area Master's programs and broader General Master's programs. The Area Master's degrees allow specialization in either Chinese or Japanese studies, primarily preparing students for doctoral research (while still serving as terminal degrees if desired). These programs typically involve thesis writing, except for linguistics students who may opt for a comprehensive exam. The General Master's degrees offer flexibility to concentrate on China, Japan, or both regions, with students choosing between a thesis or departmental paper. This track caters to those not pursuing doctoral studies.
At the University of Arizona, multiple academic units - including the School of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SILLC), Eller College of Management, School of Journalism, and School of Government and Public Policy - collaborate to develop global leaders equipped with advanced intercultural skills for today's interconnected economy.
Professional M.A. candidates work closely with their Faculty Mentor and the Director of Graduate Studies (plus additional faculty as needed) to design customized Study Plans aligned with their academic and career objectives. The Journalism Emphasis sample plan serves as a guideline; students may request adjustments through the Director of Graduate Studies when courses are unavailable or when alternative classes better match their professional aspirations and scholarly interests.
