The UW School of Music provides specialized programs in both musical performance and academic music studies. Students develop practical skills through performances, teaching opportunities, and research projects mentored by our experienced faculty. Annually, the school hosts over 100 public events including concerts, recitals, masterclasses, and visiting artist presentations. Our distinguished faculty members maintain active professional careers outside the university, performing with renowned orchestras, jazz groups, releasing albums, and creating compositions for global audiences.
The M.A. in Ethnomusicology requires students to demonstrate proficiency equivalent to one year of foundational music history and one year of music theory/ear training. Additionally, M.A. candidates must complete or demonstrate equivalent knowledge of an undergraduate-level cultural anthropology survey. This outline represents a standard curriculum framework, with each student's Supervisory Committee customizing their specific academic path. The committee holds authority to mandate extra courses beyond this list, approve course substitutions, and adapt the program to individual student needs. Students must maintain close collaboration with their committee to ensure all course selections align with the committee's recommendations and requirements throughout their studies.
