The Master of Arts in Music program provides three distinct pathways: Musicology, Music Theory, or a combined Music Theory and History track. Each curriculum balances comprehensive coverage with specialized study, incorporating coursework that enhances research, teaching, analytical, and writing abilities while equipping students for diverse careers or advanced doctoral work. At Penn State, MA Music students collaborate with distinguished scholars whose expertise is renowned throughout the University, nationally, and internationally. The Musicology concentration (32 credits) fosters extensive knowledge of musical periods while developing focused specializations. The Music Theory pathway (32 credits) trains students in contemporary research methodologies and analytical techniques. The combined Music Theory and History option (34 credits) bridges theoretical, analytical, and historical perspectives on musical styles and compositions. All tracks feature specialized topic courses and electives, enabling deeper exploration of particular interests or complementary disciplines. A thesis serves as the program's culminating requirement.
The School of Music requires the completion of a recognized baccalaureate degree in music or music education, with a junior/senior grade-point average of 2.80 or higher (on a 4.00 scale).
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
