The Master of Arts (MA) is an advanced research-focused degree that prioritizes strong writing and analytical abilities. Prospective MA candidates must demonstrate full proficiency in written English before undertaking thesis or dissertation work. Applicants need to hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
While no audition is necessary for MA admission, an interview is mandatory. Those interested in Composition and Music Education should carefully evaluate whether the MA or MM program better aligns with their academic background and professional aspirations.
Given its research-intensive nature, the MA program emphasizes advanced writing and investigative skills. Students must prove their English writing competency before commencing any major research projects.
The Composition and Music Education tracks can be pursued either through graduate research studies (MA) or graduate professional studies (Master of Music). These programs differ in focus and curriculum. Unlike the Master of Music, which mandates an instrumental or vocal audition (except for the MA in Music Leadership), the MA typically doesn't require performance evaluations. Applicants should thoughtfully consider which degree path suits their objectives.
Ethnomusicology candidates undergo the same admission process as musicology students, including writing sample reviews. Alongside standard Western music history and theory entrance exams, they'll meet with faculty to assess their understanding of global music traditions. Admission requires at least one undergraduate-level world music course or equivalent knowledge. The ethnomusicology MA program demands a minimum two-year residency.
