Each curriculum balances comprehensive knowledge with focused study, incorporating courses that refine research, teaching, analytical, and writing abilities while equipping students for diverse careers or advanced doctoral work. At Penn State, MA Music students collaborate with distinguished scholars whose expertise is renowned throughout the University, nationally, and internationally. The Musicology concentration (32 credits) fosters extensive understanding of musical traditions across eras while nurturing specialized research areas. The Music Theory option (32 credits) trains students in contemporary research methodologies and analytical techniques. The combined Music Theory and History pathway (34 credits) synthesizes theoretical, analytical, and historical perspectives on musical compositions and styles.
