Students pursuing the general concentration have flexibility to explore various aspects of Asia rather than specializing in one country or region. They can select electives to achieve different objectives, such as gaining a comprehensive understanding of Asia or examining specific themes (like politics, social transformation, or economic growth) across multiple Asian cultures. The program requires two years of Asian language study, which can be fulfilled by choosing any Asian language. Native speakers of an Asian language can meet this requirement by showing college-level proficiency equivalent to second-year studies. This open major can be declared at any time. The Japan-focused track blends language acquisition with cross-disciplinary learning to establish a strong foundation in Japanese studies. Course offerings extend to advanced levels in multiple disciplines: interdisciplinary studies, economics, business, political science, history, art, literature, and language. For higher-level language training, students can attend the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Tokyo, where the University of Washington serves as a supporting institution.
