The Chinese Studies program provides an interdisciplinary approach, enabling students with a focus on China to craft a bachelor's degree by combining courses from multiple university departments. Beyond coordinating cross-departmental classes, the Chinese Studies Program also delivers its own specialized courses to complement the curriculum. This program blends historical perspectives with a strong focus on modern and contemporary China. The History Department offers robust expertise in late imperial and modern Chinese history. UC San Diego's other departments provide comprehensive courses covering the political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of present-day China. Research areas also include visual culture and cultural history across both modern and premodern China. With its interdisciplinary framework (evident in the diverse faculty affiliations), the program caters to students with varied academic interests. Alongside campus resources, students can access study abroad opportunities through the University of California's Education Abroad Program (EAP) and Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP), which partner with institutions in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
