Students accepted into the MA Concentration in Teaching Literature and Writing are granted a tuition waiver, full fee coverage, individual health insurance, and a $12,240 stipend during their second year in exchange for teaching one course each semester. This program prepares graduates for diverse career paths—whether pursuing doctoral studies for university positions or teaching at independent high schools and community colleges—while providing hands-on teaching experience alongside thesis development. During the first year, students complete coursework in literature, theory, criticism, and writing/rhetoric, supplemented by two specialized seminars: one on teaching literature and another on teaching writing, equipping them to manage their own classrooms.
In their second year, while developing their thesis, MA candidates typically instruct first-year writing courses (though some may assist as teaching assistants in literature classes). Thesis research can explore any literary, rhetorical, or pedagogical topic, guided by the student's thesis advisor.
