The Community Psychology doctoral program adopts an ecological approach that centers on systemic inequities and social justice. Coursework covers structural factors contributing to inequality, critical analysis of psychological research methodologies, program assessment, preventive strategies, and both quantitative and qualitative research techniques. A required community field lab component involves collaborative projects with local organizations. Doctoral candidates typically cultivate specialized knowledge in an additional psychological domain - frequently developmental, social, or clinical psychology - or another field like education. The program prioritizes interdisciplinary approaches and applying psychological science to address real-world challenges.
Current research by faculty and students explores diverse topics including: risk and resilience patterns among marginalized college populations; representations of race, gender, and sexuality in media; strategies to counteract online racial bias; the connection between Black women's intersecting identities and wellbeing; mentoring dynamics in Black families; peer impacts during adolescence; and family structures within LGBTQ+ communities.
