For over 140 years, Howard University has been fulfilling its commitment to enhance educational opportunities and accessibility for underrepresented minority students and underserved populations. We develop educational leaders equipped with expertise in educational psychology, learning principles, assessment strategies, and behavioral interventions.
Howard's Educational Psychology Ph.D. program equips graduates for successful careers as psychologists, evaluators, consultants, assessment specialists, statisticians, professors, and researchers, providing comprehensive training in psychological theories, measurement techniques, and research methodologies. Students utilize scientific principles to examine learning processes, cognitive functions, and developmental psychology as they relate to educational practices, evaluation methods, and behavioral modification. The curriculum emphasizes theoretical frameworks in school psychology, developmental theories, and the biological, social, and cognitive-emotional aspects of growth. This doctoral program fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, requiring students to complete nine credit hours in complementary fields such as policy studies, educational technology, psychological sciences, social sciences, and quantitative methods. Participants enjoy personalized guidance from faculty engaged in diverse research areas, including multicultural cognitive assessments, childhood psychological disorders, and the impact of environmental factors on socio-emotional development.
