The UCI Clinical Psychology program adheres to the clinical science approach, equipping students with robust training in research methodology and statistical analysis. This foundation enables them to both understand and develop evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies while recognizing the dynamic interplay between scientific inquiry and clinical application.
Situated within the School of Social Ecology, the Clinical Psychology program adopts a comprehensive biopsychosocial framework that examines mental and physical health through the lens of community systems. Students learn to analyze clinical challenges by considering the intricate interplay of biological, social, and environmental factors that shape human behavior and experience.
Research forms the cornerstone of the Clinical Psychology curriculum. Under faculty mentorship, students engage in diverse investigations spanning fundamental laboratory experiments to applied clinical studies in community contexts. The program fosters scholarly dissemination through conference presentations and journal publications, culminating in an original empirical dissertation that advances knowledge in the student's chosen specialty.
Designed as a 5-6 year program, UCI's Clinical Psychology training incorporates a yearlong full-time internship preceded by at least two years of part-time clinical practica. These field placements in Orange County's vibrant healthcare community allow students to translate academic knowledge into practice while serving diverse populations under professional supervision.
